Day 1 – Sydney to Parkes

Katoomba Lookout

The focus of today was really just getting out of Sydney.  After the inevitable last minute adjustments and questions, we set off on the M4 westwards to the Blue Mountains.  The run out of the metropolitan area wasn’t too bad.  It was down to a walking pace for a few kilometres near Parramatta, but once clear of there we started to make progress.

Arrived at Katoomba for a short break.  Had a walk around Echo Point lookout, took the obligatory snaps of “The Three Sisters”.  As you must.

Arriving in Bathurst, headed towards the Mt Panorama race track to see if we could have a ride around the road.  Parts of it were closed as work crews prepared the road for a race meeting this weekend.  Nevertheless, it was a great place for everybody to gather.

After pub lunch in Bathurst, back on the bikes for the last 150 or so kilometres into Parkes, where we stopped for the night.  Had dinner at the ‘Bushman’s Restaurant”, with traditional Aussie Damper for starters. Nice way to end the day.

In the taxi from the motel to the restaurant, the driver told us about the “Elvis Festival”, which is an annual event in Parkes to celebrate the King of Rock and Roll. The town’s population grows from 10,000 to over 25,000.  So if you’re an Elvis fan; you know where to go next year.

Tomorrow, onwards to Hillston.
